Journaling prompt: The protean man

Journaling prompt: The Protean man

“First he shifted into a great

bearded lion

and then a serpent –

a panther –

a ramping wild boar –

a torrent of water –

a tree with soaring branchtops”

– Homer

Proteus, the old man of the sea, could take on any form; beast, river, flame, tree. If you could hold him through his transformations, he’d reveal the future. But catching him was no easy task.

The protean man is much the same. He adapts. He shifts to fit every room, every role, every relationship. He becomes who people want him to be, until even he isn’t sure who he really is.

This kind of adaptability can look like charm, sociability, even success. It can keep the peace. It can open doors. But over time, shape-shifting takes its toll. The more masks you wear, the harder it becomes to remember what your real face looks like.

We’ve all done it. Smiled at a joke we didn’t find funny. Nodded along in a meeting we disagreed with. Hidden a truth to keep the peace. There are moments when blending in feels like survival. But what happens when it becomes a habit?

The goal isn’t to become rigid, or unmoving. But to root your flexibility in something solid. To bring all your parts into alignment with something deeper and more authentic.

So today’s prompt:

Happy journaling!
